Classic Album Sundays is proud to celebrate the 45th anniversary of one of the most iconic British records in the history of modern music. Released on 1 June, 1967, The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” was groundbreaking in its musical vision, sound and concept. The album was recorded soon after the band decided to stop touring due to the pressures of the road. After enjoying a much-needed break, John, Paul, George and Ringo were recharged and creatively inspired to then spend 129 days in the studio to record an album that would change pop music forever.
Join us at 5 pm for the musical lead-up which will include selections from earlier Beatles albums as well as The Beach Boys’ masterpiece “Pet Sounds” which was one of their inspirations. We will then relay some of the many stories behind the album including the innovative and lavish production with producer George Martin at Abbey Road studios, the costumed orchestra recording event, the “Paul is Dead” clues found on the cover, the in-jokes such as the dog whistle, Peter Blake’s album design and most importantly, how The Beatles got from “Please Please Me” in 1963 to “Sgt Pepper” only four short years later.
At 7 pm the lights go down, the volume goes up and we play the album (mono version) from beginning to end on vinyl on our audiophile hi-fi. The audio menu will feature an all British hi-fi including a Rega Apheta MC Cartridge, a Rega P9 Turntable, a Linn Klimax DSM with an Analogue Preamp, Linn Klimax Solo Power Amps and Bowers & Wilkins 802 Diamond Loudspeakers. The Hanbury are kindly offering two-for-one pizzas from their brick oven to CAS attendees.
We suggest you purchase tickets in advance as we do sell out. Doors close at 6:45 or when we reach full capacity and listening guidelines apply.
